Children’s Account Fund

Imagine being released from prison with a few dollars in your pocket, the clothes on your back and an uncertain future.  Then consider the complication of unpaid vehicle fines, rent deposits, insurance premiums, work clothes and the other costs of reconnecting with society and resuming life in the community.

The Children’s Justice Alliance’s Children’s Account was created to assist moms who are participating in the Early Head Start program at Coffee Creek and their families meet  emergency cash needs during the mother’s transition from incarceration to the community.

The fund was initiated through the efforts of Dave Barrows, a Children’s Justice Alliance board member, and his wife, Pat.  As a volunteer in the Early Head Start program at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, Pat often hears the financial concerns of women   anticipating release.  With seemingly insurmountable financial obstacles and little cash  to meet those obligations,  lack of money can become a barrier to enormous success.

While numerous agencies provide an array of services to releasing parents, CJA’s Children’s Account has the ability to offer immediate cash grants or loans to qualifying

mothers with an urgent need.   Those requesting money from the fund must have completed classes in parenting, treatment and Early Head Start, and be in compliance with all parole requirements.  They must also have exhausted all family and community resources before making application to the fund.  And most importantly, CJA’s Children’s Account covers only those expenses that directly impact the ability of the mother to provide care for her children.
